UNDERSTANDING GUL
The guarantee
is in the details.
Guaranteed universal life, often called GUL, is a form of universal life insurance designed around a death benefit guarantee. Coverage can remain in force through the period specified by the policy when its guarantee requirements are satisfied.
The key is to understand what you must do to maintain that protection. Review the required premium amount, payment schedule, and guarantee end date. Late or insufficient payments, loans, withdrawals, or other policy changes may affect the guarantee.
GUL is not guaranteed acceptance.
“Guaranteed” describes a policy feature—not automatic eligibility. An insurer may review health information, require an exam, or decline an application. Available coverage depends on the product, your circumstances, and your state.
How does it compare with term life?
Term life is generally purchased for a set period. GUL may suit a need for a death benefit extending into later ages, but it requires a careful look at ongoing affordability and the exact guarantee period.
A guarantee to a particular age is not necessarily a lifetime guarantee. Ask to see the guaranteed values and provisions in the policy illustration, along with what happens after the guarantee period ends.
What about cash value?
GUL typically emphasizes death benefit protection rather than cash accumulation. Do not assume the policy will provide meaningful funds for retirement or emergencies. Review the actual cash surrender values, any charges, and how accessing value could affect coverage.

Policy guarantees depend on the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurer and compliance with the contract. Benefits, availability, and underwriting requirements vary.
